Thought it might be nice to check on the new Bald Eagle nest along the Merrimack River in Essex County.  What a terrific surprise to find two adult Bald Eagles perched proximate to the nest.  they were both just basking in the sun and enjoying the morning together!

Bald Eagle Nest: Essex County

January 21, 2016 in Bald Eagle

CF2C3821-001Two local birders checked in late last week in regard to a large nest.  They wondered if this new nest might belong to a bald eagle family.  Had a chance to check it out over the weekend.  Little doubt in my mind that it was an eagle’s nest.  Made a visit this morning and what a thrill to find an adult bald eagle perched right by the nest.  The image was captured at quite a distance and serves as a documenting photo!  A very cool find thanks to the tip from friends!!

CF2C9973-001Bald Eagles continue to be seen along the Merrimack River on the North Andover and Lawrence shorelines.  With some frequency, this pair is seen together perched on a limb about 60 feet over the river.  They seem very content and typically perch on the same limb in close proximity to one another!

Bald Eagle pair: North Andover

November 24, 2015 in Bald Eagle

CF2C8342-001This Bald Eagle pair is now seen with regularity along the Merrimack River.  A favorite perch location is on a snag that overhangs the river about 60 feet above water level.  The pair is seen often together on the same branch.  There remains a strong feeling that a yet to be identified nest is proximate to this location…..stay tuned!

Bald Eagles, adult pair

September 21, 2015 in Bald Eagle

What a nice surprise to find a pair of perched adult Bald Eagles overlooking the Merrimack River in North Andover!  These local Eagles return to this perch location each year around the end of September.  They are then seen off and on for the balance of the fall until the weather turns colder.  The great mystery is whether or not this is a local breeding pair with a next proximate to the perch location…..stay tuned!

Bald Eagle with leg band — E7E??

January 22, 2015 in Near the Clock Tower

Well it hasn’t been for lack of trying!!!!  This morning provided an unexpected opportunity to capture a number of images in a variety of settings near the Great Stone Dam on the Merrimack River in downtown Lawrence, MA.  The adult bald eagle with the transmitter and antenna moved around to a number of nearby perch locations.  Departing from one branch overhanging the river on the south side, just east of Riverside Park, afford a closer look at the elusive leg band and brings us a bit closer but no final confirmation.  So close!!

Bald Eagle adult: transmitter & antenna AGAIN!!

January 12, 2015 in Bald Eagle

While making rounds along the Merrimack River this morning, encountered an adult Bald Eagle just east of Rt. 495 perched in regular location.  Then, made a pass over the bridge by the dam in Lawrence and spotted another adult Bald Eagle on the south side of the river just west of the dam. It was perched on an overhanging branch scanning waterfowl below.  Was able to draw near and watch Eagle being subjected to crow harassment.  Although dark overcast with light drizzle, was able to capture a few nice images, including views of transmitter/antenna.  The leg band looked dark brown with no visible marking on the brownish band. Hope to get leg band numbers soon!

Bald Eagle adult along Merrimack in Lawrence!

January 8, 2015 in Bald Eagle

What a nice surprise to see a Bald Eagle back at one of the favorite deep winter perch locations along the Merrimack in Lawrence.  Over the past few winters, the Bald Eagles have waited until the coldest weather to perch on trees overhanging the Merrimack on the north side of the river opposite Salvatore’s Restaurant.  This morning, an adult Bald Eagle was perched just above a large pack of Canada Geese at the mouth of the Spicket River where it enters the Merrimack River.  After a while, it departed and nestled into a perch right around the corner.
