Lawrence Peregrines: banded fledglings!

June 10, 2016 in Near the Clock Tower

CF2C3826-001The Lawrence Peregrine chicks are now being seen around the Clock Tower both on ledges and roof edges.  they are going through the initial phases of learning how to fly.  It is very normal to watch them as they hop, skip, and jump.  The high winds have made flight attempts a bit more of a challenge.  They are quick to use their talons to grab hold of the edge of the roof to keep from join over!  Here is a photo of one of the chicks with leg bands black/green 85/BS!

Lawrence Peregrines: secret stash!

January 25, 2016 in Near the Clock Tower

CF2C5756-001First time seen in this location, with prey in talon, the female looks like she has grabbed prey and might have been thinking about stashing it away in a nearby rotted gutter with an opening for dry storage.  The male joined her before she flew off to the west!

Peregrine Lawrence: male on rooftop

December 16, 2015 in Near the Clock Tower

CF2C9833-001The male Peregrine was seen loafing around on the NE corner of the new Balance building just above the main entrance on South Union St. and overlooking the Merrimack River.  It just worked out that the peregrine posed in a nice way to display the 6/4 leg bands providing yet another opportunity to confirm ID of male falcon.

Peregrine: Merrimack St. perch

October 8, 2015 in Near the Clock Tower

One of the peregrines was seen this morning on a short protruding steel beam above 250 Merrimack Street on the south side of the building just below the roofline.  This is a favorite morning perch and provides abundant morning sun and warmth!

Peregrine male attracting female attention

March 31, 2015 in Near the Clock Tower

Fascinating to watch the peregrines on the Clock Tower this morning as finally the male was attempting to get more attention from the female.  He made a number of flights passing by the female and looking to gain her attention.  For these last few weeks, he has seemed to show little interest compared to her showing interest.  The tables and turned and that may mean eggs very soon!!

The female departed her perch on the Clock Tower and headed over the Merrimack River in slight NW direction and then landed atop the smokestack behind the 250 Canal Street complex.

Peregrine Falcon, male cleaning bill

February 18, 2015 in Near the Clock Tower

The male Peregrine has been moving back and forth between the nearby Verizon Cell Tower on the north side of the river and the a number of the regular perch locations around the Clock Tower complex.  This morning, the male, with silver federal leg band in view, was perched on the rooftop corner above the entrance to 200 Merrimack Street.  It was fascinating to watch the peregrine go through a bill cleaning process, likely after having a meal.  It was quite cold but with blue skies and bright sunlight!
