Lawrence Peregrines: a week to go?

2018.0504.1-001This morning the peregrines awoke to mostly cloudy skies, calm with little wind and the temp, a balmy 68F….with sunrise time at 5:35 AM.  The forecast for day ahead calls for a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81. Light west wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

2018.0504.2-001At 6:13 AM, the female lifted up from eggs, slowly walked to edge of  nest box, and departed, as the male swooped in, landed and headed right for the eggs.  The are well synchronized and attentive to the incubation process and shared coverage.  Later, just a moment before 7 AM, the male departed and returned less than a minute later….so likely a quick bathroom break. Typically, the male frequently seeks his turn at incubation while the female is still sitting.  When the male wants a shift on the eggs, he will often give the “waik” call from a perch some distance from, but perhaps in sight of the nest box.  The female, deciding to switch, will usually rise unhurriedly and give the opposite call to her mate before flying off!

Lawrence Peregrines: Day 22

May 3, 2018 in In the Nest Box, lawrence peregrines, Peregrine Falcons Eastern Massachusetts, Peregrine Falcons Massachusetts

Sunrise time this morning at 5:36 AM.  Morning weather conditions:  cloudy, wind from W at 6MPH, 70F.

Forecast for day ahead: a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. West wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

2018.0503-001Around 5:48 AM, the female rose up, and departed in flight from the right side of the nest box.  Almost two minutes later the male enters the nest box, moves around, pushes the gravel around, shakes side to side, and rocks forward and back.  He always seems to take quite a bit longer to settle in on the eggs.

Lawrence Peregrines: egg temperature!

May 2, 2018 in In the Nest Box, lawrence peregrines, Peregrine Falcons Eastern Massachusetts, Peregrine Falcons Massachusetts

This morning the peregrines started the day with clear skies and lots of sunshine, with winds on the lighter side from the SW at 7MPH and the temp at 55F.

2018.0502.1-001The female had been holding down the overnight incubation duties.  At 5:32 AM, she rose up and off the eggs, headed to the left edge of the nest box, and departed.  Minutes later, the male entered and did his usual and extended shake, rattle, and roll before finally settling on the eggs.  The incubation total coverage by both male and female has been terrific. Contact incubation of eggs is one of the most conspicuous features of avian biology.  Its purpose is the maintenance of a warm and steady egg temperature, and the parents adjust their lives around this entire objective.

2018.0502.2-001The transfer of heat onto the eggs is regulated  through adjustments to blood flow through the previously mentioned brood patch, and heat production by the parent, mediated through temperature sensors in the skin of the brood patch.  It s all about the maintenance of a steady egg temperature!

Lawrence Peregrines: female on rooftop!

_W7I7176-001Today, the peregrines woke up to overcast skies, with fog and mist, wind calm, and temp at 42F.  The forecast is calling for patchy fog between 7am and 8am. Otherwise, it will become partly sunny, with a high near 66. Calm wind becoming west 5 to 9 mph in the morning.  Spring is upon us finally!

_W7I7190-001The female was up early for a long stretch and then returned to the eggs.  They exchanged places on incubation duties back and forth during the day.   Around 6:30 PM, had a nice opportunity to watch the peregrines from below the box.  The female was seen in flight around the Clock Tower.  She was making a series a big aerial loops and then landed on the rooftop on the SW corner of the main building.  She took time to preen and then scratch herself with her talons.  There were loads of bugs out around the rooftop area.  A bit later the female launched into flight and took in a NW direction.
