Woburn: Peregrine – year old juvenile!

CF2C8841-001What a nice surprise to stop by for a look at the Woburn Peregrines and to find the recently discovered and reported juvenile Peregrine Falcon!!  This young peregrine was nestled in on a rocky ledge.  Morning temps were just below 20 degrees, overcast skies, and light snow.  Here is a photo of the juvenile plumaged Peregrine Falcon banded in 2015 with color band 32/BC, according to Tom French at MassWildlife. This bird was banded by Chris Nadareski on May 29, 2015 at the Water St. eyrie in Manhattan. The bird was sexed as a female. The federal band number is 1947-21569.  This young peregrine was recently photographed in flight by Tom Luongo on Saturday, 01-30-16 in Woburn, MA

CF2C8713-001Stopped by for a quick look at Woburn Peregrines this morning.  Skies were partly cloudy with light winds at 7 MPH, out of the north, temperature at 19 degrees and wind chill about 10 degrees.  One of the peregrines was squawking very lightly and then took off in flight to the east and landed on a tree branch….offering very nice looks!

CF2C8676-001The Woburn Peregrines continue to be seen almost daily in and around the Holton Street area in Woburn.  They are frequently seen nestled on ledges in and around the nearby rock quarries!

CF2C6194-001Made a short visit off of Holton Street in Woburn and found the unbanded male using his talons for bill cleaning. In the process of bill cleaning, the peregrine provides a look at it’s legs to observe if it has a leg band!  Another bright sunny morning with very chilly temps…..Groundhog Day 2016…SPRING IS COMING!!!!…America’s most iconic weather forecaster, the Pennsylvania groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, forecasts this after not seeing his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob in the town northeast of Pittsburgh!!

The unbanded male peregrine was seen ripping prey apart early this afternoon with winds out of the west blowing 15-20 MPH, temps in mid-20’s, and scattered clouds.

CF2C0570-001Beautiful clear skies this morning with temps in the low 30’s, with winds out of the north at 15, and gusts over 20.  The male peregrine was seen in Woburn, initially in flight and then settling in on the side wall of the quarry.  The male has no leg bands.  It was making a few squawking sounds and then calmed down.

CF2C0256-001An afternoon visit to observe Woburn Peregrines and found the female perched on a favorite utility pole basking in the later afternoon sun.  Note the leg bands (73/BD) on the lower left leg. Today the male was perched on a rocky outcropping nearby, but not much interaction between the two peregrines.

CF2C0188-001The male peregrine was perched atop a rocky outcropping enjoying the views and the afternoon sun with his new mate nearby.  He watched her fly and return a number of times, but made no effort to change his position or move at all!
