Peregrines: Woburn – food transfer!

March 12, 2016 in Peregrine Falcon Woburn

On Saturday morning, in beautiful crisp early light, the adult male and juvenile female were seen both perched and in flight. At one point, the juvenile female was joined by the adult male who flew into a regular perch location with food. This type of food transfer can be part of the courtship process…..stay tuned!

3 Peregrines: Woburn

March 11, 2016 in Peregrine Falcon Woburn

CF2C2938-001The action continues with the Peregrine Falcons in Woburn! A handful of regulars were seen observing and photographing the pair of peregrines along with a visiting adult female peregrine. The resident male made a number of dramatic aerial loops in the late afternoon sun as the visiting female dashed around the local area. After each aerial loop, the resident male would return to the same perch location before launching into flight again.

For those with an interest, 3 flight/perch photo series posted from both days:

Peregrines: Woburn pair

March 5, 2016 in Peregrine Falcon Woburn

CF2C1914-001Quite a show watching the Woburn Peregrine Falcons this morning.  The adult male was seen in constant motion around the quarry.  Then it captured and ripped apart a mourning dove, at one point hauling the full body to another proximate location.  the juvenile female, was seen perched on a nearby light pole and then it took in fast pursuit.

Peregrine: Woburn – bill cleaning

March 1, 2016 in Peregrine Falcon Woburn

CF2C1264-001The juvenile female peregrine was seen this morning moving around the local area and then landing on a horizontal tree branch.  It must have just finished a meal as it spent a few minutes going through a bill cleaning exercise where it gently rubs its bill on both sides against the branch of the tree.

Peregrine: Woburn juvenile 32/BC leg bands

March 1, 2016 in Peregrine Falcon Woburn

CF2C1224-001Had a nice morning visit to watch the Woburn Peregrines today.  The juvenile was soaking up the sun.  It then lifted off into flight mode to harass the male Common Raven on one of the nearby rooftops.  It buzzed the Raven a number of times, and then strafed the nest while the female was sitting on eggs in the nest.  Was able to reconfirm the MA state color-coded alphanumeric leg bands (32/BC) from photos.

Peregrine: Woburn adult male

CF2C0044-001The unbanded adult male continues to be seen on almost a daily basis around the quarry.  This image shows the male during a wing and leg stretch.  Many questions have come in regarding the pair bonding process.  Here is an excerpt from Birds of North America online “first indication of pair development is mutual perching or roosting, where male and female perch quietly together (Cade 1960). Progresses from perching on same cliff at some distance to perching side by side.”  Stay tuned to see if the unbanded male demonstrates more interest in the young juvenile!

CF2C9956-001Met up with local bird photographers, John Harrison and Jim Renault to observe the Woburn peregrines this morning.  The juvenile peregrine was seen basking in the morning sun under blue skies, winds blowing out of NW at 16 MPH, and temps just under 30 degrees but feeling quite a bit colder!

CF2C9755-001The almost year old female Peregrine Falcon in juvenile plumage continues to be seen in Woburn.  This morning it was perched on a ledge in a rocky outcropping taking in the morning sun.  It called periodically, but in a very low tone.  The winds were light out of the west, with clear skies, bright sun, and temps in mid-thirties.  The immature peregrines have more brownish plumage than the blue-gray on adults.  In addition, the immature falcons have heavier breast streaks.

CF2C9630-001Joined well known bird photographers John “Garp” Harrison and Jim Renault for a visit to the Peregrines in Woburn.  The unbanded male flew in and perched in the sun on a rocky outcropping!  We enjoyed nice looks in the bright sunshine, and bitter cold with the temperature about 2 degrees with no wind chill!
