Lawrence Peregrines: male in liftoff mode!

October 31, 2016 in Near the Clock Tower

_w7i4188-001A Monday morning visit looking for the Lawrence Peregrines, and a joy to discover the banded (6/4) male perched atop one of the triangular pediments on the SE corner of the New Balance building.  the lighting was extraordinary and terrific views of the male.  After a while, something caught its attention, and he launched into flight.  It always requires so much patience to wait for one of those exciting “takeoff in flight’ moments…..but so worth the wait!

Lawrence Peregrines: male SE corner of NB bldg

October 31, 2016 in Near the Clock Tower

_w7i4147-001One of those beautiful mornings with bright sun and cobalt blue skies. Discovered the male peregrine perched on one of the triangular pediments located at the SE corner of the New Balance building just above the intersection of Union and Merrimack Streets.  It is always nice to have such nice looks under excellent lighting conditions.  A further bonus to be able to document a clear view of the 6/4 leg bands of this long-time resident and king of the roost!  This peregrine was a 2001 hatch year falcon from Manchester, NH and is still going strong!

Lawrence Peregrines: on the weathervane!

October 15, 2016 in On the Clock Tower

_w7i0881-001During an mid-afternoon visit to the Clock Tower, had a nice surprise finding both of the Lawrence Peregrines roosting on the weathervane atop the Clock Tower.  In past year or so, this has been a very infrequent happening.  In the past the weathervane was the most popular perch location with fantastic views!

Lawrence Peregrines: female on west ledge!

October 12, 2016 in On the Clock Tower

_w7i9842-001Always a treat to check on the Lawrence Peregrines on the way home in the golden-colored late day sun.  They were both perched and just hanging out at the end of the day.  This is the female on a west-facing ledge below the clock face.  The male was nearby on an upper ledge!

_w7i9594-001Another beautiful morning in Lawrence with bright sun and blue skies. Discovered the male (leg band 6/4) perched atop the roof pediment in the SE corner of the New Balance building. Had nice, clear looks at leg bands! The male remained perched for some time just turning its head from time to time!

Lawrence Peregrines: male and female on Clock Tower

October 11, 2016 in On the Clock Tower

_w7i9435-001With less than 30 minutes before sunset, under blue skies and light winds, had nice looks at male and female peregrines while they perched near one another on a NW ledge of the Clock Tower.  Finally, the banded male burst into flight in a SW direction in hot pursuit while the female remained and started a bit of cacking!

Lawrence Peregrines: male stretching winds before takeoff!

_w7i7251-001Another late day visit to watch the Lawrence Peregrines!  Stopped by again under beautiful late day light with little time before sunset.  The lighting from the honey-colored setting sun was excellent!  This time it was the unbanded female stretching and getting ready to takeoff in flight.  Nice views of wing stretching just before liftoff!

Lawrence Peregrines: male perched at nest box

October 4, 2016 in In the Nest Box

_w7i6982-001One of the great joys is stopping the Ayer Mill Clock Tower to search and find at least one of the peregrine falcons.  It’s always a treasure hunt and a delight when locating one of the falcons.  Tonight the search was easy as the banded male falcon was sitting on the wooden perch pole at the nest box in beautiful late day light less that an hour before sunset!

Lawrence Peregrines: Male perched in nest box!

September 29, 2016 in In the Nest Box

_w7i6270-001With terrific late afternoon sunlight, made a pass by the Clock Tower in Lawrence for a look at the peregrines.  The adult peregrine was perched on the outside rim of the nest box window with beautiful westward views in the late day light.  For no clear reason, the female was nearby on an upper ledge squawking away.  The male showed no interest or reaction and neither of them moved!

Lawrence Peregrines: smokestack perch!

September 29, 2016 in Peregrines at 250 Canal St.

_w7i5846-001Stopped by the Clock Tower for a morning look at the Lawrence Peregrines.  One was perched on a ledge just above the west facing clock face.  Scanned to see if the other peregrine was nearby.  Noticed a hawk-like silhouette atop the distance smokestack almost a 1/4 of a mile away on the north side of the Merrimack River in the 250 Canal Street complex!  Sure enough, turned out to be the other peregrine falcon!
