Peregrine Lawrence: male on rooftop

December 16, 2015 in Near the Clock Tower

CF2C9833-001The male Peregrine was seen loafing around on the NE corner of the new Balance building just above the main entrance on South Union St. and overlooking the Merrimack River.  It just worked out that the peregrine posed in a nice way to display the 6/4 leg bands providing yet another opportunity to confirm ID of male falcon.

CF2C9111-001A return visit later Saturday afternoon provided another opportunity to observe and photograph this beautiful Peregrine Falcon. Again, after 30 plus minutes of preening, something caught it’s attention and it lifted off and roared past in hot pursuit!  The bi-color leg band is  just visible on the tucked in left leg!

One of the Peregrines, likely the male, has been seen regularly over the past few weeks in Woburn.  This morning, it was perched atop one of the most regular and prominent perches.  It remained on the same perch for close to two hours!

The Woburn Peregrines frequently choose to hang out in a number of nooks and crannies on a vertical rock ledge.  At times, they may be partially hidden by the shade of outcroppings or nearby vegetation.  It’s always nice to scan and find them in some of these hideaway locations!

Peregrines in courtship mode!

April 1, 2015 in In the Nest Box

The peregrines are now spending significant time in the nestbox and exhibiting all kinds of courtship behavior including mutual ledge displays and lots of nest scraping by both male and female. The female was bowing and calling out to the male from the outside perch.  The male flew into the nestbox and then left shortly thereafter.  These are all signs of courtship and hopefully will result in eggs being laid in next few days!
