The Merrimack River continues to show signs of the lingering drought with many areas of uncovered rocks on the river bed. Walked the shore line a bit this morning on the east side of Rt. 495. Among the many gulls and Great Blue Herons was an Osprey perched on the south side of the river. It looked like a possible first year juvenile and was clearly foraging for fish in the shallow waters!

With less than 30 minutes before sunset, under blue skies and light winds, had nice looks at male and female peregrines while they perched near one another on a NW ledge of the Clock Tower. Finally, the banded male burst into flight in a SW direction in hot pursuit while the female remained and started a bit of cacking!

The male peregrine falcon was perched this morning on one of the regular perch locations near the top of the quarry. The perch is a vertical rocky outcropping above and just to the right of the nest ledge. It is normally covered with whitewash and easy to locate. A beautiful sunny morning bursting with fall foliage all around!

Another late day visit to watch the Lawrence Peregrines! Stopped by again under beautiful late day light with little time before sunset. The lighting from the honey-colored setting sun was excellent! This time it was the unbanded female stretching and getting ready to takeoff in flight. Nice views of wing stretching just before liftoff!

One of the great joys is stopping the Ayer Mill Clock Tower to search and find at least one of the peregrine falcons. It’s always a treasure hunt and a delight when locating one of the falcons. Tonight the search was easy as the banded male falcon was sitting on the wooden perch pole at the nest box in beautiful late day light less that an hour before sunset!
October 4, 2016 in Bald Eagle
The Bald Eagles have returned again this fall to favorite perch locations along the Merrimack River along the Lawrence and North Andover line. At least one Bald Eagle is usually seen in the morning hours quietly perching on a snag overhanging the river bed below. The Eagle will keep a close eye on all passing activities. Had nice looks this morning from the ball field by the Essex County Correctional Center in Lawrence. The skies were heavily overcast with winds from the north at 9-10 MPH and temps in the high 50’s. The Eagle remained perched during observation.
